Federal credit

You claimed the rebate. Did you claim the federal credit?

Utility rebates get most of the attention. There is also a federal tax credit, the Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit, worth up to 30% of the capital cost of eligible equipment, including air-source and ground-source heat pumps. It is refundable, and it works very differently from a rebate.

How it differs from a utility rebate

  • No application and no pre-approval. The credit is claimed on the owner's tax return, not through a program intake.
  • It reaches back. It covers eligible equipment acquired and put into use from March 28, 2023, so work that is already finished can still qualify.
  • Taking the rebate does not rule it out. A rebate reduces the amount the credit is calculated on. It does not cancel it.
  • Natural Resources Canada can be asked for a technical opinion on a planned or completed project. It is voluntary and not binding on the CRA.

Who can claim

The claimant has to be a taxable Canadian corporation, or a real estate investment trust that is a mutual fund trust, including one that is a member of a partnership. Your accountant makes the final call on any claim.

The dates that matter

  • Up to 30% for equipment acquired and available for use from March 28, 2023 to December 31, 2033. Up to 15% in 2034. Nothing after that.
  • For some earlier projects, the window to file closes December 31, 2026. The Income Tax Act sets the deadline at the later of that date and one year after the filing due date for the year. Which projects that applies to.

Where Vandecarb fits

I work on the owner's side. I look at your completed and planned equipment projects, sort out which ones are worth taking to your accountant, and pull together what each one needs before it goes to them. Your accountant advises on the claim and files it. I do not prepare tax returns or give tax advice.

If your asset is sitting on a stale technical study, weighing a retrofit, or facing a reserve fund decision that involves equipment, that is the conversation.
